In the current political climate in India, any act or voice of dissent is considered a ‘protest’. In such a setting, what then really constitutes a protest? In his lecture Ujjwal Utkarsh will scrutinise the possibility and the potential of the observational form of film making as a form of radical film making. Throughout his Practice based PhD ‘The Revolution is Everyday’, he has been engaging with the possibility of the observational film making form to create a film-based sensorial reflection on the act of protest. At a farmer’s protest in the south Indian state Karnataka, and an anti-caste Dalit Protest in Western Indian state Gujarat, he attempted to shoot with the observational film making form-al framework and would like to use some of the footage from these two failed attempts to be able to raise the pitfalls, contradictions, and difficulties inherent in the proposed approach to better understand and highlight the challenges in the process. Ujjwal Utkarsh is an independent film maker. He was a member of the film faculty at Srishti Institute of Arts, Design & Technology, Bangalore, and at State Institute of Film & Television, Rohtak for the past few years. Currently he is PhD-in-Practice candidate at the Institute of Fine Arts, Art Theory and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.
