Non-hierarchical filmmaking after #metoo

Friday 15:00 - 18:00
Juli Saragosa
What kinds of hierarchies exist post #metoo? How can we structure authority in filmmaking so we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past? And what potential does non-hierarchical filmmaking hold in disrupting patriarchy? Is truly non-hierarchical filmmaking even possible? In this workshop, we will examine different models of filmmaking and share our experiences with the hierarchies we find in them. Together, we will conceive of and create a film, creating a new model of filmmaking in the process. Allowing time for reflection, during and after, we will analyze the structures we created and discuss whether it helped us achieve the goals of bringing an idea to the screen while also disrupting patriarchy.

We will use the tools we have at hand – our smartphones and notebooks. The workshop will be limited to 8 participants.

Filmmaker and educator Juli Saragosa grew up in an immigrant family, and was encouraged to try everything with the economic necessity to use what’s at hand. A DIY artistic experimenter who has shown work at festivals worldwide, Juli’s work extends to the curatorial and educational, as a grassroots organizer of independent festivals such as the entzaubert queer DIY uncommercial film festival (that ran for a decade here in Berlin), a mentor to young artists and currently as the first year film production advisor at Catalyst Institute of Creative Arts and Technology.
