Odyssey:  A Journey of a Filmmaker from Anatolia to Berlin

Thursday 16:45 - 17:45
Emre Birismen
It was 2014 – I was in a military hospital because of a strange illness – when I promised to myself that I would gather the energy to produce my first film. This strong motivation was the result of events in Turkey in 2013 – such as the Gezi uprising and the corruption scandal from December 17th to 24th. Both sparked my interest in creating dystopian settings to portray the collective fear of Turkish society.

At the screening table we will discuss the path from the start and rediscover the causes, obstacles, motivations and consequences of being a filmmaker. We will ask fervently what we are looking for and what will satisfy us.

Emre Birişmen, born in Istanbul in 1986, lives and works in Berlin since 2019. In his artistic production mediated through film and video, he focuses on themes of survival, immigration, inequality, freedom, and justice. He emphasizes user immersion through audio-visual collaborations. He conveys an imaginary narrative that interacts with the absurdity of realpolitik. Inspired by his personal experiences, his dystopian productions critique authoritarianism and oppression. He works as a member of various collectives such as Funke Kollektive, KABA-HAT Kollektive, and FILM RISS THEATER on different political and immersive themes.
