Addressing radical leftist political videos on YouTube, and the experiments with the formal qualities of video and performative presentation that some of the most prominent voices of Leftube have been engaging in. In consideration will be the essay film form, the explosion of the video essay online, and points of consonance and dissonance between radical YouTubers and video artists/ artist filmmakers using streaming video platforms. This will be explored from the perspective of an artist film maker and the intersections and implication of the online video essay with my own practice, which has taken forms such as live performance and often utilised photochemical materials. The talk will reference and incorporate an interview with US-based video artist and curator Adán de la Garza, exploring online hosting of radical political video art and artist film. Marcy Saude received an MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and is currently undertaking a practice-led research project focusing on early film and management theorist Hugo Münsterberg at the Temporal Image Research Open Laboratory at Plymouth University.
